To ensure the safety of residents in the Newmont Akyem Mine communities and control crime as perception has it that people living in mining areas are rich, the Foundation hatched the idea to support community watchdog program to complement the efforts of the security agencies in ensuring peace in the communities.
The communities selected 85 able bodied youth with confirmation from the District Police Commander if any of them has had any criminal record in the past years. The selected members went through a ten-day training by the District Police Command to build their capacity to support security within the communities. During the ten-day training, the committee members treated topics like Human Rights, Domestic Violence, Community Policing and Patrolling, Handling of Crime Suspects and Criminals, Crime Combating and arrest and Crime Reporting. Operational tools including uniforms, torchlights and tags among others were provided for them
